Beauty Trends for Spring 09

Forget fickle finances, January is supposed to be a time for fresh starts and bold ambition. So, pick one of the upcoming trends for Spring 2009 and keep your chin up and your eyes on the prize. How about cute boho braids à la bonita Rosario to show off blue highlights that are so hot right now? Not your style? Fair enough, play it safe with natural one instead. Just don’t forget the big, black eyes…

1

Hair-wise

The bold look this season is '80s Glam Rock, so start channelling David Bowie and Kate Bush now. “Vulgar is the new chic,” says Cult Beauty hair & beauty expert Mathew Alexander.

CB’s fellow hair guru, Karine Jackson, is working the whole rainbow, especially “platinum blondes with blue pieces or vibrant reds and greens,” adding undercuts, heavy side partings and that ‘80s classic – the perm. Uh-oh. Be like Neve Campbell and do it naturally with ammonia-free Organic Curl Systems.

Mathew says men's hair trends are currently inspired by the 1940s. Clean, lean and mean. “Strong side partings, sleek hair, tapered into the neck for a tailored look. Colour is minimal with emphasis on making natural hair look shinier with waxes and pomades.”

Face-wise

Mathew sees us wearing Roxy Music glam on our faces too.  “Bold graphic colours and neons are big right now, with spiky lashes and sculpted '70s cheekbones.” But you gotta talk the talk, to walk the walk. “Strong eyes and lips will work – as long as you have the attitude to carry it off.” Make up maestro Daniel Sandler agrees that lots of dark eyeliner (blacks and browns) is key – as seen at Gucci and Mathew Williamson.

Alternatively, bronze it up with brown and yellow/gold eye shadows, as used by make up goddess Pat McGrath for Bottega Venetta. “You want browns with a bit more strength to give more depth and richness. This doubles up as a really good colour for brows. Do your eye make up first and then use what’s left over for the brows.” Cunning. Crush Eyeshadow Trio from Duwop (£20) is what you’re looking for.

2

Nail-wise

And, if your nails need a treat, it’s out with the orange and in with the coral, says CB’s nail expert Teresa Smith –  Coral Reef by Essie (£8.50). Alternating nail colours – anything from black/white to orange/pink is proving popular (for parties or students only, of course).

Or, for something more wearable, keep it real with “squoval” (as in square-oval, get it?) and short nails instead of square – much easier to maintain and can help elongate shorter nails without the hassle of too much length.

And there we have it, folks. A veritable smörgåsbord of trends. And, if you’re feeling hesitant about the perm or the hot blue streak, remember you gotta be the change you seek in the world! Too much? Ok, maybe. But don’t forget every great day starts with great style…
