Ettore Sottsass’s work is some of the most recognisable to come out of the 1980s. And just as polarising. His Milanese artist collective, Memphis Group, were only in operation for six years, but their creations have gone on to represent a fleeting moment in design history, when bright, contrasting colours, Art Deco and Post Modern references seeped into every aspect of culture. The Met’s exhibition takes a wider look; across six decades of Sottsass’ body of work, including interiors, textiles, pattern, painting and photography.
