Artist Interview: Alistair Burleigh / Wrap3

Doris Day

Apart from hosting some of the hottest fashion designers, On|Off also supports new creative talent in art and design from around the world, bringing them all together at London Fashion Week. UJ talks to some of the artists involved this season.

Describe your work and how you have used it to create a piece for On|Off.
My work is a collision between two worlds, two spaces – virtual space and physical space. For On|Off I’m producing a 360-degree spherical video installation that will be a giant retrospective digital mirror showing past events.

What is inspiring you at the moment?
Rural mid-Wales, Gelligaer particularly.

What do you love about London and what are you most looking forward to during Fashion Week?
I like the gathering of so many creative people in one intense area.

How do you think fashion and art relate?
They are both an expression of creativity – producing new ideas, developing a new direction.

If your work could be translated into something wearable, what would it be and why?
Digital fabric, my whole work revolves around using projection technologies to generate digital / virtual second skin for solid objects. Wearable technologies that produce similar effect are the obvious next step.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Bigger better harder stronger faster – my company Wrap3 is developing a number of high profile commercial video object projects for public space environments + several major event and brand names also so watch out for those in the near future.

Your career highlight so far?
Producing a giant 3d video art installation for the new James Bond movie and heading over to South America to film live on set with all the A-listers etc – a very interesting experience. I have some other highlights coming up in the very near future but they are all currently top secret.

If you could describe Urban Junkies through your art, what would it look like?
A many sided shape, different colours for each segment.
