UJ at London Fashion Week February '09

Originally published on Tuesday, 24th February 2009

Gossip: Monday

Haven't got anything nice to say? Come sit by us.

Monday, 23rd February

Overheard:

Got Gok
Erstwhile cool and collected fashionista outside the Science Museum: Oh my God. That's Gok Wan. I totally want to show him my bangers.

Kanye
Front row guest 1:
Hey, did you hear Kanye West was in town? Apparently he was at Unique.
Front row guest 2: Ha, that's quite cool. You know what's not cool though? If he comes to this show and they make us move. Definitely not going to happen. Well, actually, he can sit on my lap. But he's not getting my goody bag. Definitely not getting the goody bag.

Ah, the Insight…
Lift goer 1: God I hate lifts.
Lift goer 2: I know, this one totally reminds me of the one in Liberty. It just goes up and down and up and down...

Gay man clutches at his chest in horror
…and points to a lady in a giant pink and purple fluffy hat:
Dear God, she massacred the Muppets.
Gay's mate: And they thought knife crime was a problem.

Museum of Fashion
Show-goer 1:
Why didn't you like it?
Show-goer 2: I just didn't feel like I learned anything new…
SG1: What are you on about? It's a fashion show, not a lecture.
SG2: Yeah I know, it's just I'm in a museum. If I can't learn something in here, what's the point?

Manners
Lady in enormous hat to the woman sitting behind her: Sorry dear, can you see alright?
Woman: Well no, not really actually.
Hat lady: Oh dear. Maybe you can move.

Meaty Number
Beautiful young thing at the local kebab house: I'm sorry, but is that meat organic?
Chap behind the counter: No, it's lamb.

Around Town:

Model Behaviour
Strange antics
ensued at Rozalb de Mura's catwalk show for On/Off Presents, as one male model seemed to lose faith in the straight, serious walk, and proceeded to do a mad little dance for the photographers before bouncing around for the front row and heading off again.

Fashion Fix
Hanging out at The Hummingbird Bakery behind
South Ken Tube Station has had some of the most fashionable queues snaking outside it's doorway, as show-goers stop in for their daily cupcake fix.

Sugar-Minis?
On/Off Presents was a complete celebrity palooza. There was Gok Wan, being utterly charming; Jodie Harsh in sequinned black harem pants and patent purple wedges; Jodie Kidd in all her long-limbed glory; and, erm, Heidi Range from the Sugababes. Who is, by the way, absolutely tiny. In heels. And considering she always looks the tallest in their videos, it really begs the question: are the other band members in fact midgets?

The Dark Room
As an inadvertant power cut robbed Beyond the Valley's circus-themed party of all light, a voice of authority assured the packed room that it was just a fuse and that everyone may as well make the most of the sudden intimacy. Needless to say, when the lights flicked back on moments later, never have so many glittering fashionistas and infamous drag queens been caught in flagrante, as it were. Whilst we're not saying it was anything close to an orgy of clowns, that was certainly where it was heading…

We're Disarmingly Fond Of
… the bespeckled interns
manning On/Off's tenure at the Science Museum. Big, geeky glasses might not be new, but they're still clever. Or at least they make you look clever...

UJ Loves
Pam Hogg's
metalics. Where have you been for the last 25 years of our life? So Katie Grand's LOVE; so right now; so, so … so inimitably Pam Hogg.

Spotted:

Peaches Geldof, back from terrorising the States in time for Olivia Rubin's show. Trademark headband (cream flowery wedding confection), check; grotty looking sidekick in tow (definately not her husband, but perhaps her next one), check. Seen to mouth, "I'm bored" before the show had begun. Yes Peaches, we know you're terribly important, and 'Disappear Here' is surely the most influential mag on the front row, but give the poor masses a chance to take a seat eh?

Thought For The Day:

Fashionable Benevolence
We've been noticing a sense of benevolence pervading Fashion Week this season - and apparently we're not alone. The Daily reported front row editors actually sharing pencils and holding each others lunch. Meanwhile statement style pieces are also out; whilst one woman was berated for wearing the latest Vuitton safari shoes in New York, London fashions are most definately going DIY, back of the closet recycling style. Kindness and craft couture? What is the (fashion) world coming to?
