Artist Interview: Dan Hiller

Describe your work and how you have used it to create pieces for On|Off.
The images used by On/Off are from the strand of my work that involves scrapping together bits of old Victorian prints and my own ink drawings on the computer to produce new pictures, influenced by Max Ernst, gin and many an hour spent poring over old and copyright-free books.

What do you love about London and what are you most looking forward to during Fashion Week?
London’s a big playground that always has something new to offer. I’m looking forward to On/Off of course, as well as the launch of Lee Paton’s new collection a little later on which I’ll also have some involvement in.

How do you think fashion and art relate?
Fashion’s obviously an artistic form and certainly fulfils many of the same sort of aesthetic interests as art, and the two can influence one another. Eventually many years down the line when viewed again in museums and books I think people look at fashion items as clothing rather than as art. Fashion’s generally about beauty and art doesn’t have to be.

If your work could be translated into something wearable, what would it be and why?
Someone sent me a picture of a lady sporting an octopus dress not dissimilar to my ‘Mother’ image recently from the Vecona fashion show in Brugge. People wandering the streets in realistic bird-head masks would be nice.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?
A very long and slow degeneration into old age and probably an eventual inability to recognise members of my own family, then my demise.

Your career highlight so far?
Having my pictures flash across the screen for 0.5 seconds on Sports Relief Celebrity Apprentice.

If you could describe Urban Junkies through your art, what would it look like?
Like a smiling Ringmaster with a luxuriant moustache and clacking lobster hands watching a plucky ant from his Insect Circus jumping poignantly to its death through a hoop of golden flame.
