Wright Brothers Soho

Borough Market's best washes up West.

12-13 Kingly Street, W1B 5PP - 0207 434 3611
www.thewrightbrothers.co.uk

Location

Smack bang in the middle of Carnaby with a terrace on Kingly Court, the oyster specialist’s subtle new doorway on Regent-adjacent Kingly Street belies the three floors of space spread out inside – and all this a mere two minutes walk from Oxford Circus.

Vibe

Relaxed and buzzing, this is clearly going to be a big lunchtime go-to spot for seafood lovers, judging by the crowd of media types clambering onto the downstairs stools and supping fish stew at high wooden tables. More hang-out than going-all-out, we like the casual atmosphere and chance to watch the chefs in action. Plus the staff are super knowledgeable about all of their products – from winkles to whelks.

Flavours

Super fresh shellfish is the name of the game, with delectable oysters (UJ loved the Duchy natives with lemon and shallot vinaigrette, though the bigger Maldons tickled our tastebuds too), warming fish soup with rouille and Gruyère (served alongside a piece of bread chargrilled over a naked flame with that smokey BBQ taste), and a bubbling fish pie of salmon and haddock presented in individual dishes straight out of the oven. Clear your palette with lemon sorbet from Soho neighbour Gelupo. We saw the deep-fried whitebait with tartare sauce leaving the kitchen on multiple occasions too and had serious food envy.

Décor

Slap bang white tiles and industrial fittings line the downstairs space, where an open stainless-steel galley kitchen is buffered by a bar, lightbulbs dangle casually from the ceiling and a sign saying ‘Shuck Me’ pretty much says it all. Check out the chalkboard hanging alongside black and white fisherman prints for the daily specials, and head upstairs for more formal table arrangements and banquettes, whilst the courtyard outside boasts benches and rustic beer barrels for summertime-snacking.

Upshot

We loved the casual vibe paired with professional cooking and the same quality of produce as you’d find down at the original market space  - or by the seaside. The various small dishes are great for quick, light lunchtime snacking, and our suggested wine pairing made for the perfect crisp accompaniment. Soho’s dining landscape definately just got more interesting.
