Nightlife Top 10 / Happiness Forgets
Below stairs on Hoxton Square
One of London’s least gimmicky and best new bars – in been-there-done-that Hoxton Square? It's true. This small, friendly, dimly lit cocktail joint scores where other speakeasy-style dens stumble, by getting two things bang on: atmosphere (uncontrived, friendly, civilised yet fun) and refreshments. Try a Journalist, made with gin, vermouth, Cointreau, bitters and lemon; or a Louis Balfour, aka Talisker malt whisky with port and Amer Picon apéritif. Just so you know, the bar name comes from a Dionne Warwick song.
Top Tip:
You can book a table, but half of the 50 seats are kept back for walk-ins, so don't be afraid to give it a whirl.
