… a whirlwind week in Mykonos, it’s clear, we’re hooked. Yes, there may be a lot of traffic, and it’s not easy on the wallets, but there’s a lot to love still: open-air clubbing, fewer restrictions (à la sound in Ibiza), less development all around, villa parties ‘til next day, sunsets, and of course, the food – for a start. This issue we’ve spoken to a few island insiders to give you some Mykonos inspiration, and we’ve also included some recent spots we checked out. Also, word on the MYK rumours street was that Scorpios, now with the Soho House backing, is set to expand, with Miami and the Bahamas (or somewhere in the Caribbean) first on the (maybe) list. If it’s true, it sounds good to us. In London, as offices quiet down, we plan on getting out and exploring our own town – that lunch in Soho we’ve wanted to do, the open-air concert, or the boat down the canal. Let’s make the most of it. Happy August everyone!

Veg Around Town

You are what you eat

It’s not news that you should be mindful of where your veg comes from. From urban farms in cafés to specialist produce shops and online buying options, it’s never been easier to say no to Tesco.

Second Act

Rhymes with a side of tots

So, this is just for a bit of fun… You may have seen that Mark Wahlberg has a burger joint called – wait for it, Wahlburgers – that recently opened in Covent Garden (we may have a mocking tone, but we do love that it seems this chain was built largely for his family). But did you know that hot on his heels is the Nas backed chicken and waffles haunt Sweet Chick, taking over from Carluccio’s Market Place? No loss there and at least it should have better music. If that’s not enough, maybe you also need a Rick Ross chicken wing? Not new, but still on Shaftesbury Ave.

Alexandros Varveris

We’re hearing a lot of good things about the Mykonos newbie, The Wild Hotel by Interni. We caught up with owner and founder of the Interni Group, Alexandros Varveris, to hear a bit more about his story.

My biggest career lesson: there is always the right time for everything.

Most memorable career moment… I am not there yet – I am still pursuing that.

I’d tell my younger self… to be bolder.

The English countryside comes to Dalloway Terrace

Feel like you need a country escape? Then it’s time to head to WC1 as until mid-September, single-estate sustainable spirits producer Ramsbury will be taking over London’s Dalloway Terrace with Estate of Mind, bringing the countryside to central London, complete with drinks and décor. Expect seasonal cocktails created by the Crucible and Dalloway Terrace’s own General Manager, Giovanni Spezziga – inspired not only by the Ramsbury Estate in Wiltshire, but that use ingredients actually grown on the estate, too. There will be G&Ts that you can garnish yourself, and innovative cocktails that offer a taste of the English countryside at its finest. We feel refreshed already.

The terrace is open from 11am-11pm, walk ins only

Soutine

Forks out!

Reviews, openings, news

This week we’re light on the restaurant front. We checked out the new Corbin & King, Soutine; want to check out the new Wun’s by the Bun House team, Nutshell, the new Iranian restaurant (with ex-Palomar head chef Jeremy Borrow at the helm), and Eggslut (Portobello, August 7); and have the next new-wave food court – Seven Dials Market, which will be run by Kerb – on our radar. Oh, we also love this recent brunch list by our friends at Eater – let’s get at it.

Scorpios

Sunday Night resident Kaz James’ Scorpios mix

It’s being hailed as one of the best nights in Europe – Sundays at Scorpios – and Kaz James is the DJ who has made it so. Often in the booth with top guest talent like The Martinez Brothers, Guy Gerber, DJ Tennis and Solomun, this is open-air disco dancing at its best (Soho House members, be sure to use the separate entrance to fast track; this night draws over 3500 people weekly). If you haven’t been yet, press play to get a taste of the Aegean seaside vibes.

Lisbon Festival

13th-15th September

Summer’s not over – you still have time for one more festival, and this rather newbie looks like the one. Now in its second year, Nova Batida takes place in the heart of Lisbon from the 13th -15th September, offering festival-goers a fully rounded getaway. In addition to the music, which will see big names like Octavian (UJLoves), Daniel Avery, Ross from Friends (live) and DJ Seinfeld, there will also be great culture (art tours) and dining options including two supper clubs with top Portuguese chefs and local street food and drinks on site. On the wellbeing front, Fat Buddha Yoga will provide free yoga and meditation classes across the three days, and if that wasn’t enough, Lisbon is currently seen as one of the best surfing hotspots worldwide; Nova Batida will be offering bespoke surf lessons as part of their offering this year, and anyone from beginner to experienced pro is welcome to join.
