| | | | Roe | Look Up | Cityscapes | | You’ve probably noticed lately that everyone in London is headed to the City. If you haven’t made your way to Canary Wharf in awhile, now is the time, as there are a few new restaurants to check out. First up, the big one: Roe, from the Fallow team, is leading the charge on those who are hopping the DLR for the first time in ages. Marceline, the French/NYC-inspired brasserie, also opened yesterday, and the excellent SOMA bar, by the Kricket team, is opening in this part of town soon, too.

|
| | | | | Olympic Spirit | In LDN | | Is it just us, or do the Olympics seem more exciting this year? The style, the drama, the backdrop. And with only a few days left, now’s the time to check out some of London’s Olympic activity. If you haven’t already been, a good place to start is at Selfridges. As part of their Sportopia activation, there’s the Champion Sports Bar at Harry Gordon’s – head there for the clothing archives, sports bar menus and screenings; then there’s the excellent Nike x Jacquemus pop up in the Wonder Room – get there before it closes on the 12 August; and while you’re there, look for Sportopia merch like this classic foam hand, too.

| | | | | Sol's, Kolamba East, Lahpet Larder | Around Town | To note | | Just Opened
Officially opening today is Kolamba East, the second location for Sri Lankan restaurant Kolamba (on Kingly Street). Also recently opened, joining the recent The Park launch, is Sol’s in Bayswater, from the team behind Margate’s Fort Road Hotel, a new wine bar, deli and bottle shop, which sounds like it will be a great addition to the neighbourhood. In Fitzrovia, No. 23 is Carousel’s new Mezcal bar; in Bermondsey, Lahpet Larder has just opened, serving a Burmese-inspired menu with ingredients imported from Myanmar; and should you be in Victoria and in need of lobster ravioli, there’s a new Harry’s.
Coming Soon
José Pizarro is opening his new concept, Lolo (café by day, wine bar by night) in Bermondsey on 12 August; KOL’s Santiago Lastra will open Fonda on Heddon Street in September, and LIMA is opening a Shoreditch location this autumn, with Nikkei and Chifa (which blends Japanese and Chinese techniques with Peruvian ingredients) cooking.
Events
Jackson Boxer has a new guest series with Ruinart, featuring three-course menus at Orasay; follow them on socials for the next one. Tickets are now on sale for Carousel’s Paired event (with Gilles Peterson and chef Yoji Tokuyoshi), this time at the Tate Modern on 13 September.
Summer Fun
The Laundry restaurant in Brixton has a new soft-serve series and incoming flavours include peach (9 August), chocolate (16 August), and Caravan coffee (23 August); at their Parlour, Fortnum & Mason have a limited-edition Eau de Nil ice cream, which pays homage to the (supposedly under threat) Blackpool rock candy; and this month, Pastaio’s slushy flavour is the guava margarita from Rome’s La Punta, who have one of the city’s best-stocked tequila and mezcal bars.

| | | | | Coming Soon | From The Standard | | Opening this September in SoHo is The Manner, a new luxury concept from The Standard Hotel team. They say it will feel more like a private members’ club than a hotel, in line with the Boom Boom Room at The Standard High Line, which sounds great. Also, while we’re on the topic of NYC, it’s New York Restaurant Week, now until 18 August. NYC in the summer, swoon. ❤️

| | | | | Via Notting Hill | Urchin | | This one feels fresh. After being inspired by urchin colonies in the Small Cyclades, the Sifnos pop up Urchin, a 10-course, 10-seater omakase, will be a prelude to a new Japanese restaurant by the same name in Holland Park (opening early 2025). It’s a collaboration between Notting Hill Fish Shop, Dorian, and Supermarket of Dreams (all of which are part of the same mini empire), and a roll call of great Greek names: Chef Giorgos Samoilis of Cantina Sifnos and Pelicanos Sifnos, Athenian PR Yiannis Olympios, artisan baker Betty Koulouri, and the natural wine bar Loggia Sifnos; on the cheffing front, Yuji Shimokawa Kelly from Dorian (ex-Umu) and Juan Cardona who looks after everything sushi for the group will be heading things up. On until the end of the month at Pelicanos Sifnos, Sunday-Friday, reservation details here.

| | | | | Locke de Santa Joana, Wheelhouse, Bar Alimentar @revista_visao | Take Three | Stay, Decompress, Dine | | If Lisbon’s on your travel list, three newish openings to note include the brand new Locke de Santa Joana hotel, which offers a much-needed vibey abode in the capital. It’s just getting started, with further openings within the hotel to come this September. Also brand new is the new wellbeing emporium, Wheelhouse, from LA’s favourite horoscope maven (and UJ fave) Chris Corsini. Head here for their therapeutic salt cave, workshops and treatments. And relatively new, from the chef/founder of the much-loved Tricky’s restaurant, João Magalhães Correia and celebrated mixologist Frederico Falcao Soares from Imprensa, is the Italian-influenced Bar Alimentar, which not only has a great menu (white fish crudo with citrus, mint and red onion being a highlight), but might just have the best dining room in the city. They also do collabs with visiting chefs, like the recent one with Jolene’s Marcelo Rodrigues; follow them for updates.

| | | Surrenne | Stay to play | | Yes, we’ve mentioned Surrenne before, but it’s come to our attention (thanks Charlotte) that they have, amongst so many great things, a studio with a huge interactive screen, that brings the best digital yoga, pilates, and fitness classes in on demand. They also have a café with a menu by UJ fave Rosemary Ferguson and a very bouncy custom-built floor for the Tracy Anderson Method classes. And good news: if you book a room at The Berkeley or The Emory, you can also use Surrenne, which sounds like the perfect summer staycation right there.

| | | | | News | Tech, tagliatelle and tropical house | | Is Miami becoming a new tech hotspot? Apple have leased a huge new office space in the Coral Gables neighbourhood, Microsoft have taken an office in Brickell, and Amazon is also supposedly sniffing around. Also transferring to Miami is Milan’s Sant Ambroeus restaurant, opening next year in a luxe office space The Fifth, designed by Alberto Campo Baeza, winner of Spain’s National Prize for Architecture. And for something new, Kygo, in collaboration with Continuum Company, a Miami real estate firm, is set to open a music-based hotel and restaurant concept this December called the Palm Tree Club, replacing the much-loved Miami restaurant Shuckers; read what locals have to say about it.

|
| | | | | @barbara_bonner | Summer Activations | Le liste | | Another summer day, another sunshine brand activation. We thought we’d do a little roundup of ones on our radar. Continuing on the Miami tip, LVMH popped up at Miami’s Casa Neos this summer, with a temporary shop and branded pool takeover. In Spain, Casa Loewe (which includes a greenhouse with perfumes) is at the Marbella Club, and Off White™️ have done a takeover at Jondal in Ibiza. In St Tropez, Tory Burch is at Nikki Beach, and as we’ve previously mentioned, Jacquemus has their own boutique, restaurant, and beach pop up. In Italy, Dolce & Gabbana are at Porto Cervo’s Hotel Cala di Volpe and all across Europe, Veuve Clicquot has a host of different Sun Clubs.

|
| | | | | Take Two | News | | We’re going to keep this short. Excitingly, there’s a new high-speed train planned that will go between Madrid and Lisbon in three hours. It will be operational by 2034, so although it’s not that soon, they’re also saying it could be reduced to six hours by 2027. In Italy, the Amalfi Coast has a new airport, or rather Salerno Costa d’Amalfi, an existing airport for the military that has been updated to operate as a commercial airport, with flights already going on Easyjet from LGW.

|
| | | | | Hotels | For the bank holiday | | So, getting in and out of Notting Hill Carnival is not the easiest! And if you aren’t being hosted by a friend who lives locally, it’s even more difficult to have a comfortable day. If that’s the case, why not book a room? On the luxe end, there’s The Laslett – start on their terrace, then hit the streets. There’s also the reasonable Ruby Zoe, which would be a convenient place to refresh. And right in the mix of it all is The Portobello Hotel. All hotels had rooms available at the time of publishing. See you there!
