This week we have a loosely themed literary issue for you. We’ve also included a few Easter ideas as we’re big fans of this four-day break; it’s a rare moment with minimal obligations and stress before the mayhem of summer begins. Have great weeks all.

Memoirs
Read all about them

Three memoirs that we need to read include Graydon Carter’s recently published When the Going Was Good, about the glory days of magazines (bring them back…); from a similar epoch is legendary restaurateur (of Balthazar and Pastis fame) Keith McNally’s I Regret Almost Everything, which he himself claims is ‘the worst book ever written’ (out May). And out now is Mark Ronson’s memoir, Night People: How to Be a DJ in ‘90s New York City.

Kiosks
They keep a-coming

It started for us with Arman Naféel’s Are We On Air? kiosk–o-thèque on Sunset Boulevard, a newsstand, event and retail space, podcast backdrop, and all-round cultural space – but now, the newsstands keep on coming. On now until 13 April at Milan Design Week, Belmond are doing an Airmail kiosk takeover, showcasing their cultural publishing collaborations, including the latest addition to their Recipes & Wanderings series, Campania; and in NYC, Peggy Gou just unveiled a Gou’s News Kiosk, to commemorate her Don Julio 1942 (‘194Gou’) collab.

The One We Need To Get To
One Club Row, by The Knave of Clubs team (Patrick Powell from Chiltern, James Dye from Bambi and The Camberwell Arms, and Benjy Leibowitz from The NoMad NYC). It opened last week in Shoreditch (above their pub), has white tablecloths and candles, frites on platters, martinis, pasta, and… need we say more? Looks great.

Haute Burgers
Are all top chefs doing burgers now? First there’s Jackson Boxer’s Gorgonzola Burger that has people racing to get one of the 10 made daily at Dove. Now there’s Heard, a new smash burger spot from two Michelin-starred chef Jordan Bailey in Borough. And over in Stoke Newington, Melanie Blatt’s burgers are served every Tuesday in The Londesborough, and include interesting combinations like The Beef One (Mexican-inspired beef birria patty, melted manchego and mozzarella, pan-fried chipotle honey sweetcorn, pickled red onion and fresh rocket) and The Cheese One (mac and cheese patty, smoky maple bacon mushrooms, crispy and pickled red onion and rocket, with a parmesan and tomato dipping sauce).

Noodles
Spotted on Amy Poon’s Instagram, @kungfumama (Taiwanese noodles, shaved ice, baos) looks great; opens today and they’re offering 50% off until 11 April, between 11-3.

Bar News
Superstar Argentinian bartender Tato Giovannoni returns to The Emory Rooftop Bar this season, curating the cocktail menu. There truly isn’t a better view (or drink) in town. From 24 April, walk ins only.

Easter
We usually stay away from tea, but Easter tea at The Delaunay, before or after a West End stroll, sounds great (19 and 20 April).

Coming Soon
Carnaby Street could use this… Under the Counter will be, literally, under The Counter restaurant in Soho, and will be a listening bar, with cocktails and a bar menu, opening 18 April. Follow them for an updated DJ line-up.

Country Creatures Chef Series, Oxfordshire
Feel like a breath of fresh air? Returning to The Double Red Duke in Clanfield, Oxfordshire is Georgie and Sam’s Country Creatures Chef Series, where four dates will host guest chefs in the kitchen including Ibai’s Richard Foster (30 April) for French Basque cuisine, Rose Chalalai Singh (11 June) for home-style Thai, Rochelle Canteen’s Margot Henderson OBE (8 October), and Niklas Ekstedt for Nordic cooking (12 November).

Falmouth
In case you’re heading to Cornwall for Easter, Beach House Falmouth is a new shack-like seafood restaurant and bar built into the rocks, overlooking Swanpool Beach and nature reserve; this is the group’s fourth property, adding to their portfolio of coastal venues.

Aman Nai Lert is Aman’s new property in Bangkok, in Nai Lert Park. A portion of the proceeds from each booking in April will be going to charities who are providing help to those in need following the Myanmar earthquake.

Farm Wellbeing, Lectoure, South of France
From Kirk Haworth, founder of Plates, the UK’s first plant-based Michelin star restaurant, comes Plates Farm and Retreat, a wellbeing spot he’s opening with his sister in Lectoure (which is equidistant to both Bordeaux and Toulouse airports). Min stay four nights, opens in May.

Luxe Off-Grid, Rote Island, Indonesia
Following the success of their remote A list-loved getaway, NIHI Sumba, the team behind the property are opening NIHI Rote, which will have 22 villas on a beach, with all things wellbeing and organic.

Picks

Planet Organic has a new, much-needed shop, just minutes from its original location on 108 Westbourne Grove. Getting serious about running? Then make an appointment at Run and Become, close to Victoria, where they’ll let you try on (and run in) as many shoes as necessary until you find the perfect fit; they may not have the most stylish selection, but they claim to have shoes that really are the best of the bunch, for whatever type of running/walking you do. Lastly, another day, another sauna: this time we’re highlighting Othership in NYC, which has a 90-person ‘performance sauna’ (hmmmmm…), and claims to be one of the largest saunas in the States. If you go, report back…

Brand Activations

You probably noticed that Chanel had a fun fair-inspired beauty activation in the Covent Garden Piazza (called Rouge Coco Playground), complete with a skate ramp, games and ice cream. Meanwhile, over in Dallas, Jacquemus has just opened a working bowling alley at Neiman Marcus, in celebration of their ‘Le Petit Turismo’ bowling bag. And at the beginning of March in NYC, a 60-foot balloon of a bikini-clad Kim Kardashian appeared in Times Square for two days, marketing SKIMS Swim.

In New York, Barneys closed after 97 years in business, but there’s hope for the new Parisian designer emporium transfer, Printemps New York. Set on Wall Street, there’s fashion, home décor, accessories, and five restaurant/drink spots over two floors in a historic Art Deco building; we’re hearing great things.

In London, Plaster Store, by the mag of the same name, has just opened on 20 Great Chapel Street in Soho. Expect art collabs, clothing, Plaster merch and other pop ups.

Tis the Season
2025

It’s that time of year again: Ibiza is open for business soon – from around Easter for many restaurants, followed by a blitz of club openings after the International Music Summit at the end of the month. Most of the club residencies start up again at the end of May/early June – check Ibiza Spotlight for all dates. And the big news this year is that the club that used to be Privilege is re-launching as UNVRS by the Night League crew (Hï and Ushuaïa); the opening is 2 June, but we’re hearing there are going to be launch parties before then, keep checking on Instagram if you’re interested.

And lastly, Claridges have just unveiled a new portrait for their collection, by long-time artist in residence, David Downton, of our friend, dancer/actor/stylish man-about-town, Eric Underwood, joining the likes of SJP and Joan Collins.
