Ahead of Beat Hotel Festival in Marrakech, we spoke to co-founder Nick Griffiths to find out what he gets up to when he’s there, and who to catch at the event.
What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re in Marrakech?
Soak up the city’s old-world charm by getting lost in the rabbit warren-like networks of the medina.
Can you recommend us a hidden gem there?
Le Jardin is a multi-level café/restaurant owned by Kamal Laftimi (who also owns Nomad and Café Des Epices). It’s right in the middle of the medina, but opens into an oasis of calm, with lush plants and a delicious menu of Moroccan and international dishes. Go for the octopus with romesco and peppers.
Which new names should we check out at the festival?
I’m looking forward to Perel who released her debut album on DFA last year; plus, representing Morocco’s homegrown sounds, we’ve got Driss Bennis and Kosh from Casablanca’s Casa Voyager label.
And who should we see for a good dance?
Young Fathers headline live on the Sunday night, hopefully keeping everyone going until the finish line. On the DJ front, Gilles Peterson for one of the daytime pool parties and Hunee for a late-night club set.
Where should we go to recoup after the festival?
Take your pick from the mountains or the beach – the Atlas Mountains for some walking or Essaouira for some beach time. Check out our good friends Sunny Side Up who organise wellness and culture trips across Morocco.
