It really feels like there’s a constant flow of hotel openings in the capital and this year has been no different. From the Standard London in King’s Cross and the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park’s relaunch to The Stratford – and everything in between, it seems we can always use more hotel rooms. This autumn sees three newbies launch in the capital, all with roots/partnerships from elsewhere.
Recently launched, Mama Shelter London, from the much loved Mama Shelter group from Paris, has found a new home in Hackney. With 195 rooms starting at £99 and its proximity to Bethnal Green location, this will definitely be a welcome addition. Other highlights include a 100-cover restaurant, karaoke rooms with retro video games (we’re hoping for Miss Pacman), an outdoor courtyard with retractable roof and a giant, built-in Twister board.
In Southwark, the latest Hoxton Hotel is coming (opening this week, 192 rooms), but what we’re most excited about is their restaurant Seabird, which is a collaboration with James Beard and the award-winning team from NY’s Maison Premiere (we love it there). Set on the 14th floor, there will be an OTT fruits de mer plate, London’s largest oyster selection and a show-stopping raw bar. Can’t wait.
Lastly, back in Shoreditch, this autumn will also see the opening of nhow London, from the Spanish group NH hotels. Their website may be a bit off-putting (the design is a bit much), but as it’s part of the 250 City Road development, designed by Foster + Partners, maybe there’s hope yet. There will be 190 rooms set over eight floors, and they’re going to have a reinvention of the British pub, which sounds interesting.
