We all have our well-worn art favourites. But there’s no need to stick to what you know. In December we brought you news of London’s major art events for 2018, and now we’re looking internationally. The modern Pop Art stars have aligned, and there’s three great ones to catch. So shake up your usual favourites and plan a trip to see something truly memorable…
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s I Want! is only open for five weeks, so make sure you get over to the Magda Danysz gallery in Paris to see it soon. You can expect JCDC’s signature hijacking and tongue-in-cheek appropriation – this time he’s commenting on the cycle of collabs within the fashion industry, and giving some side eye on the musical chairs of creative directors. Get those Eurostar seats on lock down.
Considering Gianni Versace’s ties with Berlin (he held his first ever exhibition there in 1994, and his debut show was in the German town of Lippstadt), it seems fitting that his largest retrospective yet should be housed at the city’s Kronprinzenpalais. Expect Versace creations worn by Prince, Madonna, Elton John, George Michael and Naomi Campbell, as well as a reproduction of the designer’s bedroom from his famous Miami home. Gianni Versace The Retrospective is open until 13th April – plenty of time to get a weekend booked off for a modern master.
And stay here for this one. The National Portrait Gallery presents Michael Jackson: On the Wall from 28th June. It’s set to be a landmark event exploring the singer’s influence on contemporary art across several generations, during what would have been his 60th year. Pieces by Andy Warhol (the first to depict him back in 1982), David LaChapelle and Isa Gengken will all feature in this exploration of “the untold story” of Michael’s impact on art.
