The Lowdown
It’s not exactly an undiscovered gem, but Coombeshead really has it all when it comes to a rural escape: esteemed chefs offering a unique farm-to-table experience (Tom Adams of Pitt Cue and April Bloomfield of NYC’s The Spotted Pig), bucketloads of Georgian grandeur, and Dartmoor and the North Cornwall coast nearby.
The Journey
Disclaimer: Coombeshead is quite remote. You can make the drive in about an hour from Exeter, though – so take a train there and then hire a car to get to Launceston.
Food and Drink
Eating! Breakfast is included in the price of your stay at Coombeshead, and is often touted as one of the best in the country – whether you want granola and kombucha (all made on site) or home-cured pork belly and scrambled eggs. But (provided you’re staying in from Thursday-Sunday) it wouldn’t feel right to come here without booking in for dinner, too. The menu changes depending on what’s available, but it’s guaranteed to be seasonal, local, and served up around the inviting communal table. Oh, also – drinking. Tom’s wine cellar is said to be quite legendary.
The Highlight
Yes, it’s surrounded by 66 acres of farmland, and yes, you’re staying in a Georgian farmhouse complete with a kitchen garden – but anyone who stays here will tell you Coombeshead is all about the food. Feasting vibes!
