March 2018Scott Hallsworth’s pan-Asian pop-up has finally found a permanent home in Soho. Located in Barrafina’s former Frith Street digs, Freak Scene’s ‘curious Asian plates’ take inspiration from Japanese, Singaporean and Malay cooking. Some of the signature plates from Freak Scene’s Clerkenwell pop-up have returned, like the miso-grilled black cod tacos with sushi rice, chilli crab and avocado wonton bombs (our personal fave) and that infamous chicken-fried chicken with peanut soy and cucumber pickles. When you walk in, take a seat at the bar and watch the chefs work, or a slightly less rowdy spot facing away from the kitchen. The vibe here is fun: you’ll find yourself nodding your head to the loud rock soundtrack, and, if you’re brave enough, ask to try some of the hottest chilli sauce in the world, washed down one of their signature shots.
