If you thought you were getting bored of small plates, make a trip to Gunpowder and you’ll remember why they’re brilliant: you get to experience so many more flavours. Of course, this is only a benefit when a restaurant is good, but luckily Gunpowder is seriously good. This is home-style Indian cooking at its best: the aloo chat, spicy venison doughnut, lamb chops and soft shell crab are all classics and not to be missed from any order, but make sure you leave room for the Old Monk rum pudding (like bread pudding, but better). If you’ve been to any of Gunpowder’s sister restaurants (Madame D, Gul & Sepoy) you’ll know the deal: this is buzzy, intimate dining, and also very busy – arrive early if you want a table.
