Prepare for spice. Harneet and Devina Baweja are back with another addition to the family; Gul and Sepoy, on Shoreditch’s Commercial Street. The menu is a two-parter, with Sepoy reflecting Chef Nirmal Save’s modern take on rustic, provincial-style food the soldiers of the Indian army would could whilst on the move. Masala wild rabbit terrine with celeriac and fig and lavender kheer will both champion the nose-to-tail cooking of Nirmal’s childhood. The Gul menu is a different kettle of fish. Here, the banquets of the Raj palaces will be brought to life in E1, and it certainly gets lavish. Three bird’s awadhi korma, jackfruit and walnut ke-sheek and kid goat raan with pickled root vegetables designed for the table to share. As we saw with Madame D’s Himalayan opening earlier in the year, Harneet and Devina love a concept to get their teeth into, so expect this one to played out with just as much charm.
