Top 5: BBQ Joints

Smoky, meaty goodness

  • Som Saa

Bag a table at Som Saa for Andy Oliver’s (of The Begging Bowl and Nahm) take on Isaan cuisine. Dine on salt roasted red prawns, aubergine salads and pork curry with pickled garlic and ginger before sampling some kaffir lime G&Ts or Muay Thai Kicks (gin, Thai basil, lime, sugar and basil seeds). Alternatively, head here for a Sunday brunch and try the rice porridge and Climpson & Sons Thai coffee.

  • Kitty Fisher’s

Mayfair, we’ve missed you. But now, thanks to new restaurant Kitty Fisher’s (named after an 18th century courtesan), W1 is back on our radar. Tomos Parry (YBF’s Chef of the Year) takes charge of the grilled Basque menu, but unlike his previous residency at Climpson’s Arch, this is one sexy spot – think dimly lit via candelabras, deep charcoal hues, rouge velvet banquettes and antique cast iron fittings. We’re also loving the sound of the drinks list: Basque-style G&Ts, Bad Kitty cocktails, and ‘Overnight’ Bloody Marys.

  • Bo Drake

Bo Drake, the latest East Asian BBQ joint and Anju bar, serves up a sweet and pickled menu of East Asian dishes – with a few British ingredients thrown in. Think crispy crab, with aioli and lime, fatty tuna bowl, with avocado, jalapeno remoulade and rice and smoked brisket bowl with pickled daikon. Leave room for the sesame soft serve.

  • HotBox

After smoking their way around the capital (Street Feast’s Dalston Yard, Hawker House and Battersea Power Station), HotBox has finally found a Spitalfields roof-covered home. On the menu is a collection of dishes inspired from trips around the world: smoked chinese spiced duck, wagyu short rib tacos and slow smoked char siu pork buns.

  • Smoking Goat

Smoking Goat, a Thai barbeque and drinking den doing some interesting new things. Expect woodfired combos such as our faves, the chilli crab with coconut cream and salty curry leaves and coal roasted aubergine salad. Plus, being a drinking den, late nights are a focus – think loud vinyl tunes and a strong cocktails
