Top 5: Spitalfields Restaurants

Your guide to the area

  • Pitt Cue Co

Swapping their Soho spot for a bigger city space (80-100 covers) isn’t the only change Pitt Cue Co has made. They’ve rid the menu of pickle backs and have pulled back on the barbecue, focusing instead on curing, roasting, smoking – think grilled pork chops, whole roast turbot, and smoked pork jowls, washed down with a solid wine list and beer brewed on site. But the biggest change? They’re taking reservations.

  • Walter and Monty

Specialising in marinades and charcoal cooked meat and fish, it’s simple, barbecue goodness. The cuts of meat will be served in a flatbread or straight up with rice and salad. Oh, and for those who want ree flow access to pints, beer taps are on every table.

  • Som Saa

From a pop-up in Peckham to a yearlong residency at Climpson’s Arch in London Fields, Som Saa has finally found a permanent home in Spitalfields. The menu is larger but the focus will remain on lesser-known dishes of regional Thailand, so don’t expect run-of-the-mill pad thai or chicken satay. There’ll also be a bar with all manner of Thai-inspired cocktails and Thai snacks – double orders of the old fashioned (with sandalwood, smoked buffalo trace, mandarin peel and acacia gum) paired with betel leaves with citrus cured wild sea bass are in order.

  • Farmer J

For those working around Spitalfields, make time for lunch at Farmer J. Specialising in charred meat and fish, whole grains, seasonal goodness and fresh salads, trays are filled with a protein (meat, tofu, fish…), grains and two vegetable sides. Plus, they have sandwiches, soups and salads.

  • Blixen

East London has finally had a crack at a grand European brasserie, thanks to Clive Watson (The Garrison, Village East, The Riding House Café), with long-time friend and business associate Justin Gilbert by his side. The 120-cover restaurant is focused on informal dining: laptops, coffee and mid-week suppers, with a classic Euro twist – think a spacious, light-filled interior with a terrazzo-covered floor, mid-century furniture, brass fittings, and leather banquettes.
