Spatia Comporta

Clean lines and lots of space, nestled in the pines

Details

More info

About an hour and 15 minutes from Lisbon, you’ll arrive at Spatia Comporta. The understated concrete sign (muted colour with chic font) sets the tone for the property. This is one special, pared-back stylish abode; a welcoming but sophisticated space that truly fits into its surroundings. Nestled into the pines, with wood and sand almost everywhere you look, it’s perfect for families, couples, and big groups. It also seems to be a destination for locals in the area and Lisbon residents who are frequent Comporta-goers.

The Hotel

The ‘compound’, as it were, is made up of double rooms, newer cabanas, and villas, and they also have ‘estates’ on the way. There are only 39 rooms and 27 villas, and the grounds are expansive, meaning that just as the name says (“spay-sha” is Latin for space), no matter where you stay, you have a lot of space.

The Vibe

Indoor effortlessly merges with outdoor by way of natural materials, fluid flowing buildings and elevated design, like the huge cylindrical skylight in the entrance.  There’s a real sense of camaraderie here between guests – a welcome change – with breakfasts spent exchanging niceties. If it’s quiet you want, though, you could definitely stay here and not see another soul. Trees sway in the wind, sand glistens, and the pool gleams: this is one peaceful spot.

The Rooms

Doubles have hammocks and a separate lounge area; cabanas (launched ‘23) are their own structures with contemporary design that includes wood slats, Terrazzo tiles, huge indoor and outdoor showers and a private outdoor lounging space. Villas range from two to four bedrooms, some with their own pools, and they can also be pre-stocked with groceries and serviced by a chef on request. Their newest offer, estates, will be larger than villas, on extensive plots of land, with high sliding doors that seamlessly blur indoor and outdoor. Both the villas and estates are privately owned, but some of them are rented, too.

Restaurants/Bars

With a restaurant, Nesto, that serves breakfast and also food by the pool, and Spatia Club for drinks and snacks, there is always someone on hand to wait on you. Breakfast finishes at a very respectable noon, and they have special nights like BBQs with live music that you can book.

Highlights

The atmosphere. Private, upbeat, and extremely family friendly (and not in an annoying way). You’re also a very close drive to many of the beaches and towns. For beach clubs, head to Praia do Carvalhal for Sublime Comporta Beach Club, or Praia do Pego for JNcQUOI Beach Club, both which have reasonable beds/loungers.

Anything Else

The gym and spa is under construction and will open next year; they have padel and tennis courts with three day racquet immersion programs (with six hours of private coaching a day); they have amazing spaces for a private event; the pools throughout are great for kids, with shallow areas; and they have daily transfers to the two most popular beaches.

Spatia Comporta is available to book via Welcome Beyond, a site which has an incredible selection of design-led properties.

Spatia Melides

Spatia is also opening a property (2025) in the nearby town of Melides (where Louboutin’s Vermelho hotel is; everyone is talking about Melides!), which will have villas and a larger hotel, with 60 rooms and a restaurant, that will be very close to the beach. The villas are currently for sale and they will have a beach club in the future, too.
