The only Relais & Châteaux property in Tokyo, The Kitano is the sister property to the Japanese-owned Kitano in New York. Located near the Hirakawachō intersection, the property is very conveniently located, for whatever you’re here to do.
The Hotel
Set on a main street, step inside and be instantly enveloped into the calm of The Kitano. There’s something extremely comfortable about this space, both in its service and the design. The hotel began as a property with serviced apartments for long-term residents; it’s now a boutique hotel, but the feeling of it being a second home remains.
The Rooms
Room décor takes subtle inspiration from Japan’s four seasons, and materials like cherry wood and crushed velvet make things cosy. There are mini bars with gratis goods, plus well-stocked bathrooms complete with Miller Harris products and sheet masks. You may be on a busy road, but you won’t hear a thing as the windows (that you can open) are double glazed and soundproof.
Restaurants / Bars
The L’Orangerie Koh-an restaurant is a must. Breakfast is served here, and includes smoothies the size of shot glasses, tiered-trays of pastries, and a refined à la carte menu; this is a stylish culinary affair. For dinner, order the multi-course discovery menu, which stands out for many reasons: aesthetic arrangements, precision with dishes like Salmon Wellington that are difficult to get this right, but also because the portions are perfect; you can actually, comfortably, manage a multi-course menu here. There’s also a tea lounge, rooftop bar with great views, and a 14-seat sushi restaurant.
Highlights
The suites. They have kitchens and washing machines harking back to the hotel’s roots as an apartment hotel. And the L’Orangerie restaurant, which is open to guests and non-guests.
Anything Else?
There’s also a salon, a well-known acupuncturist and a periodontist – we’re assuming the latter two have a mostly local clientele.
