Travel: Do Not Disturb

The Portobello Hotel

Legendary townhouse in the heart of Notting Hill

Details

More info

The Curious Group of Hotels are an interesting bunch. With an MO for doing things differently, boutique is in their DNA, and this townhouse is no different: it’s a place where the eccentric is celebrated, and even courted. Which is a very refreshing approach.

The Hotel

If these walls could talk. We know, it’s a cheesy phrase, but the tales that come from this hotel (founded in ‘71) in its original rendition include Alice Cooper ordering mice for his pet python, Robbie Williams trying to buy the hotel’s eight-foot, round, 70s-style bed, and Kate Moss and Johnny D filling the standalone tub with Champagne, natch. The Curious Group of Hotels acquired the hotel in 2013, giving it a much-needed but relevant update, and we assume, a good scrub. It now feels perfect for its central, Notting Hill location: eclectic, intentional luxe-boho, with personable service.

The Vibe

This is a neighbourhood place. It’s relaxed and homely, with staff that are eager to make sure you have a great stay. The street’s a quiet one, but you are a stone’s throw from Westbourne Grove and Portobello.

The Rooms

If you can, splurge for an ‘Outstanding Room’, which have things like bookcases that hide closets with minibars, four-poster beds, and standalone tubs. All the rooms have a certain charm, though: most of the ‘Better Rooms’ are on the top floor and feel like you’re in a cosy attic annex. The décor throughout is mismatched and whimsical: think heavy patterned drapes and hand-painted bedside tables; bright teals, soft pinks, gold, copper, and flashes of royal blue and saffron. Things feel very British, but then you’ll see a flash of Asia.

The front of the hotel is on a residential street, the back looks onto a shared garden, and the rooms feel soundproof; it’s almost like you have your own flat. Mini-bars have wine, coffee, and haute snacks, and bathrooms have sustainable Green & Spring products. Some rooms have large palms and fresh flowers. The word ‘boutique’ truly feels right here, which is fitting as they claim to have been London’s first boutique hotel. This feels like the real Notting Hill – the proper bohemian one, almost in a time capsule, operating in the present day.

Restaurants/ Bars

There’s a small living room that also serves as an honesty bar and restaurant, but you’re in Notting Hill: a short walk away from an array of excellent restaurants and bars.
