Have you ever popped to your local Costcutter for a pint of milk and some Bavarian smoked cheese, but picked up a piece of contemporary art instead? Well, I haven't, but I can do as of today. Not that the bargain convenience store is now stocking Hirsts and Chapmans along with tinned goods, rather a new gallery has just opened up round the corner from me on Goswell Road in Barbican. |

Simply and aptly named Exhibit, the gallery is hoping to provide a handy cultural resource for the bankers, drama school wannabes and freelance journalists populating the area. They are opening with an exhibition by Hong Kong artist Anothermountainman, who is continuing his exploration of cultural identity through red/white/blue laundry bag fabric, which he has previously explored at the recent Venice Biennale 2005. Expressing his feelings for the capital, he was inspired when he came across Hong Kong's ubiquitous domestic product with its patriotic stripes for sale in a certain overpriced Soho boutique. And in a curiously cyclical slant of creative irony, the space - next door to my dry-cleaners - is also trading as a shop selling a collection of furniture, books and accessories with an accent on traditional craft and contemporary design. However, I'd better remember the groceries from now on.
