Down by the River
Beat the heat

Ah, those first few heady days of summer...

Before the heat and sweat-stench of the tube makes that tourist next to you throw up his Garfunkel's lunch all over your new Balenciaga. Super.

But no, summer in the city is lovely, especially if you spend most of it meandering away the day in a riverside pub. The South Bank is one of our favourite winter haunts (and first date location), but you'd be hard pressed to find somewhere good to drink that isn't full of tourists and Chavs swilling Stella.

Welcome then, The Riverside, Vauxhall's newest pub on the banks of the Thames. The large glass doors open out to the water ensuring you won't get too clammy as you neck that pitcher of Pimms.

And the food, created by Sean Slater (an A-lister fave), includes confit of duck, mussels and clams.

There's live jazz on Sunday and - even better - it's open until midnight Monday to Saturday. Sweet.
