Wandering around Soho within the last ten years you could be forgiven for believing you had strolled on to the set of Hollyoaks. The heart of the creative capital is awash with over-designed bars all selling the same over-priced drinks and all playing the same ubiquitous funky-house soundtrack. Where's our Lower East Side?, you might well ask. |

Thankfully Frith Street has always had a unique sound of its own. Walking past Ronnie Scott’s world-respected jazz club at any point since 1965, you might have been lucky enough to hear notes from the likes Stan Getz, Curtis Mayfield or Tom Waits drift out of the door. Before leaving us in 1996, Scott had planted his love of New York jazz clubs firmly into the foundations of Soho, forging a haven for ground-breaking musicians. After three months refurbishment the legendary venue re-opens its doors on Monday. Updated with a new, but respectful design and menu, the club will remain host to the world's finest jazz musicians. The Monty Alexander Trio get the honour of being first up on stage, followed in the same week by soul jazz vocalist Carleen Anderson. The summer line-up really heats up though with the arrival of keyboardist Ramsey Lewis, Latin-jazz singer Joyce, pianist Chick Corea and horn-man Wynton Marsalis. Hollyoaks style can blow on that.
