Bowled Over
Strike it

So far this year - the year of the bowl - you've been for a posh bowl (All Stars), a retro bowl (Bloomsbury) and a chav bowl (arcade near the Eye), but now you're ready to try a 'British bowl'.

Sounds like a paradox, we know, but amongst the Pan Asian, Thai Fusion and Modern Global establishments of South London, The Balham Bowls Club is claiming a little corner of Ramsden Road forever England.

Wander through the unassuming entrance and you'll be transported into a shabby-chic snug replete with antique fixtures, original bowling club memorabilia (which, admit it, you've been trying to find on eBay recently), and casual dining room with HRH portrait.

There's wi-fi (freelancers, note the new office space!), a good selection of beer (we embarrassingly love the saccharine sweet raspberry Leffe, may not be British, but seems so right here), a new seasonal menu (unveiled today), and a snooker club in the pipeline.

So Balham. Films and slick dining at The Exhibit, the largest Waitrose on the Southside, and now cosy suppers at The Balham Bowl.

If you ask me, this is another point South.

Balham Bowls Club
7-9 Ramsden Road, SW12 8QX
Bar open until 1am, (note: no actual bowling here, although crammed with memorabilia).
