Let the
Californian sunshine in… |

It's a really juicy collection of rare tracks recorded on the West Coast between 1966 and 1982. It includes soul in many of its forms including Northern soul, funk, soul jazz and blues, but there's plenty of raw soul power too. The in-depth sleeve notes connect the dots between the largely unfamiliar artists made up of session musicians and players from San Francisco and Los Angeles' under-the radar soul scenes of the time, some of who went on to play with the likes of George Clinton, Sam Cooke and Fela Kuti. Stand-outs include Gow Dow Experience's jazzy 'Compared To What?' and
Mokie J.J. & R.O.B.'s psychedelic 'Beverley' and a great cut from
Spanky Wilson. |
