Bella Union 10th Birthday at Royal Festival Hall 11 July It is worth previewing this gig early as now is the time to snap up tickets. It's a celebration of the label Bella Union's 10th birthday. Formed as a labour of love and a place they could call home by Cocteau Twins no less, the label is indeed a respectable pillar of the independent music scene. |

What's really exciting about this gig though is the chance to see headline act Midlake. Those unfamiliar with this American band need to get up to speed quick for they are a real find for anyone who is a bit partial to the psychedelic rock delights of The Flaming Lips or Grandaddy. Formed originally by a bunch of jazz musicians in Texas, the group
developed a penchant for Herbie Hancock-esque jazz-funk before graduating
to a deliriously good soft rock that has earned them a gaggle of highly
devoted followers. To say they sound like Fleetwood Mac jamming with
Neil Young almost does them a disservice, for they have a breezy freshness
all of their own. |

If you can't make the gig, hunt down a copy of their last long player 'The Trials Of Van Occupanther'. You will be in for a very pleasant surprise. Midlake
