It says a lot for people's taste in New Zealand that a band as subtle as Fat Freddy’s Drop can be local stars and regular visitors to the national chart, whilst to the rest of the word this soul music sits very much on the periphery of the mainstream. |

The same can be said of The Black Seeds - a platinum-selling act in their homeland but largely unknown here. Again like Fat Freddy and his gang, they also have achieved their own Kiwi slant on reggae music. Their slothful dubby rhythms perfectly undulate beneath fetching songs with a charming pop hook. 'Into The Dojo', released at the end of July, will certainly be a contender
for soundtrack of the summer. |

The Black Seeds are indeed another example of some of the musical treats to be found in New Zealand. The best advice is to latch on to them now because you will be likely to be buying this album next year anyway. It's funky, roots and splendid. The
