You know those West London types, always thinking they're so cool and one step ahead of the game (as opposed to East London types who think they're 10). There's always some little alcove in their manor that becomes so hip it hurts. |

For too long now it's been that curve in Westbourne Park Road where The Cow, Rosa's and the Westbourne are tucked (the latter no longer cool amongst anyone but rugger buggers), so it's something of a relief that there's a new nook nipping at its heels. Kensal Rise has been bubbling under for as long as we can remember but finally it seems to really be getting its act together. Ever since the The Chamberlayne, the latest groovy foodie pub from The Salusbury team, opened just over a month ago, in-the-know Westies haven't been able to keep away. With its elegant high-ceilinged room, lots of space out front and the best chateaubriand and bearnaise anyone's had in a long time it's like bees to honey. For the more low-key, there's the wonderful boutique wine shop and bar, Samson Miro, a few doors down, where you can try some of the exclusive old world wines (a rarity in these days of new world Ribenas) before you buy, and chase them with a plate of Italian meats and giant olives. And then, not strictly on the Rise but close enough, there's every gourmand's best-kept-secret of the moment, Ida (pronounced Eeda, FYI), the cosy, family-run restaurant where locals clamour for the seafood risotto and Gran Padana, pear and walnut salad. Rumour has it, The Paradise is due for a refit too. Notting who? |
