Weekend Guide

We're going for a positive mental attitude at UJ HQ at the moment. Sure, summer's a washout, but no matter – there are exotic happenings aplenty this weekend. We've got sexy soca beats, Peruvian cuisine, tutti frutti… and a London lido (inflatables included). And if you want to face up to reality, then there's always Norfolk.

This Weekend’s Picks

• FRI Soca Frenzy at Scala • SAT Lima
• SUN Tutti Frutti at Dalston Superstore

QUEUE AHEAD

Burger and Lobster

If you're planning to queue for Burger and Lobster this weekend you may want to reassess. Come Tuesday, a branch will be opening in Soho (with a third opening in Farringdon soon). They'll be offering exactly the same menu – £20 for a lobster, burger, or lobster roll – but unlike its Mayfair predecessor, they will be taking bookings. Hooray!

Burger and Lobster opens July 17
36 Dean Street, W1D 4PS

FRIDAY

THEATRE:
VIEUX CARRÉ
  PARTY:
Soca Frenzy

Vieux Carré, a revival of Tennessee Williams' autobiographical play, centres on the ramshackle boarding house in which he lived. Fleeing to New Orleans in the 30s, the aspiring writer encountered bizarre, poignant and funny characters, who ultimately became subjects of his work. Look out for UJ friend Samantha Coughlin as Jane.   If you missed Rio then put some carnival colour into your summer at Scala's Soca Frenzy. Tropical beats and energetic sets will be the order of the day here, with DJ Tate, DJ Scooby, Mr Migz and many more. Feathers, brights and bling are a must.

PARTY PICS
UJ x Belvedere Brunch PartY @ Le caprice

People came out to play early in Mayfair last weekend to celebrate the UJ x Belvedere Brunch Guide. And celebrate we did, with classic Bloody Marys, Pineapple Marys and Cucumber Fizzes, while food came in the form of brunchy bites – crispy duck rolls, chilli tiger prawns, mini crab burgers and quail eggs benedict. A big thank you to Le Caprice for their 5 star service, and huge apologies for kicking the Mayfair set out of their local. Don't forget to check out Le Caprice's new brunch menu, now served on a Saturday.

ESCAPE

The Long House

Escape the city this summer to The Long House, the latest from Living Architecture (who are also behind A Room for London). Modernist prairie is the feel at this 5-bed, 5-bathroom barn structure, situated amidst fields in a small village in Norfolk. Designed by Sir Michael and Lady Patty Hopkins, expect contemporary touches through and through, and 43 miles of coastline (try nearby Wells-Next-The-Sea).

The Long House, from £1590 per week (sleeps 10)

SATURDAY

FILM:
Damien Hirst Documentary at Other Criteria
  EAT:
Lima

We're on a bit of a Damien Hirst binge at the moment – Tate Modern, Tramshed, Burger King (yes, you read right). If you missed his documentary 'Thoughts, Work, Life' it will be playing, on repeat, until August in Other Criteria's photography room. Expect candid interviews and footage from his personal archive. Oh and pick up some Hirst wallpaper too.   The Peruvian wave continues in the capital. After the success of Ceviche (and its pisco bar) and the recently opened Asia de Cuba pop up, make room for another South American sizzler from Virgilio Martinez (of Central in Lima, and previously Astrid y Gaston). Of course, there'll be ceviche available, but expect modern dishes like turbot with Amazonian citrus and suckling pig with potatoes (cultivated at 4000m above sea level). And pisco, can't forget the pisco.

SWIM:
London Fields Lido
  PARTY:
Tutti Frutti at Dalston Superstore

We're joking. Sort of. It's not the Pacific Coast, but you can pretend (it is heated, after all) in London Fields Lido. Enjoy 50 metres of Olympic-sized fun, or you could always opt for the Sun Terrace (again, joking). Check the timetable for activities.   Quash your Sunday night blues and enjoy some Tutti Frutti at Dalston Superstore. This week's soul/disco Sunday sesh sees DJ Squeaky (of NY's Downlow crew) providing the tunes, followed by TrailerTrash's Mikki Most, who'll be digging through his vinyl collection.
