Think of Can Cires as a home away from home, just without the rooms to sleep in. Victoria and Francis have converted this 200-year-old finca near San Mateo into a place to hang out, play games and attend talks and community gatherings; they can even organise walks and bike rides for you to explore San Miguel, Santa Agnès, Cala Aubarca and the surrounding area. Of course, it’s also a restaurant, serving up lunch on weekdays and moonlit dinners of steak, cod, squid, fried octopus with potatoes, onions, peppers and garlic, and sea bass with herbs from the garden.

Top tip: If you’re staying in a hotel but fancy a dinner at a homely villa for a night, book out one of the separate rooms for the next best thing.
