The food at St John's incongruous off-Leicester Square outpost is as thrilling as the menu descriptions are terse: breakfast here on prunes (sensational), breakfast buns (like English croissants), ham (home-cured) with eggs and fried bread or virtually the world's best bacon sandwich. There's nowhere else like it for feeling like a Londoner of a morning.

Top Tip:

All is calm at 8am: go early, sit in the corner by the window and watch as the dining room – and Chinatown – fills up.
