Golden locks

Last February print masters Eley Kishimoto showed off their Autumn/Winter 05/06 collection entitled 'Dark Wood Wander'.

Through fabric and print the design duo told the mysterious tale of a lone girl lost in the woods, one of the most distinctive prints to emerge from the story was a repeated pattern of long golden locks.

Who would have thought several months down the line those Rapunzel-esque locks would be the striking feature of a contemporary urban tower? Yes, fashion and architecture have come together, again, to create the very first installation commissioned by the Architecture Foundation.

To coincide with the foundation's brand new East End gallery, The Yard, Eley Kishimoto worked with 6a Architects on the temporary structure. The idea is to entice Joe Public to explore the architecture that ultimately affects them.

Hairywood Tower is a 6.3m high beacon of public space, clad in giant locks of laser-cut plywood. By day dappled light streams through into its interior, while by night the mood is reversed when the tower is lit from within demanding plenty of external attention.

The tower and gallery open today, so climb the structure for yourself and watch the hustle and bustle of the city below.

Hairywood Tower at The Yard - until August 31 2005. 49 Old Street, EC1
12-6pm Tues-Friday, 1-4pm Saturday
