Retail is always looking for new concepts and, though New York is rarely the seat of creative genius, it looks like our cousins across the pond have come up with a great idea. |

Just as boutiques are looking bland and department stores are getting dull, someone has finally come up with a way to market one-of-a-kind goods from young designers, without having to trudge through the rain. Emerge*NYC, at 65 Bleeker Street, is like a luxe indoor version of Spitalfields Market - where each mini 'boutique' is complete with chandeliers, wooden floors, glass fronts et al. Described as a modern-day bazaar for emerging designers who are keen for retail space - but not the financial responsibility of a boutique - the space consists of 26 store-in-store stalls, all selling one-off and bespoke items (everything from frocks and specs to books, accessories and art). The brainchild of Nicholas Petrou - who also started The Market NYC on Mulberry Street, a similar concept only open on weekends - Emerge has truly filled a retail gap. True, Dover Street Market sounds similar in sentiment, but still don't think there's a shop in London, where you can mix with a host of designers, in a market(ish) atmosphere under one plush roof.
