Pan Asian. Isn't it all starting to taste a little samey these days? E&O's been doing a roaring trade for as far back as we can remember, but when the latest outpost of fast dim sum emporium Ping Pong hit Westbourne Grove, it all started feeling a bit like a cash-in. |

Mika, the latest venture from the people behind Golborne Road's Number Ten, looks to be the real deal. Casual, no frills interiors belie a Japanese menu that boasts the freshest ingredients we've tasted this side of Borough Market, and dishes that would put most of its competitors to shame, at prices that make as well for a low-cost lunch on the run as a casual dinner with friends. Dishes are both original and wholesome - think Dom Buri and hand rolls comprising the likes of tobiko, kabayaki eel and blue fin tuna, sourced from Japanese foodhalls and veg from neighbouring Portobello market. What we can't quite understand is how, in the notoriously health conscious (read obsessive) locale of Notting Hill, no one's opened a dedicated independent sushi restaurant before now. Bye bye Pan Asian, hello to the original source. |
