Time Out
Dig in

Admit it. You think you're some sort of Big Time Charlie in the office don't you? You think your work has lasting value, that it somehow matters.

Well, you're wrong, and a literal demonstration of your work's impermanence takes place this week at Asia House.

All this week a group of Buddhist monks will painstakingly create a sand mandala (a 'painting' constructed from millions of coloured sand grains) using pipes called Chak-purs to vibrate the grains into place. Visitors are welcome throughout the week to watch the image take shape, or to simply chat with the monks and learn more about this art form.

The mandala takes shape all this week before its destruction on Saturday afternoon in a ritual ceremony. If you work nearby this is a great way to mark the week's progression, while simultaneously getting that ego back under control.

After all, it's only work - and it could all be gone in a flash of your hard drive.

Tibetan Tantric Art - Creation of a Sand Mandala by Monks From the Tashi Lhunpo Monastary
The sand mandala is free to view until Friday April 28 from 10am-6pm at Asia House, 63 New Cavendish Street, W1.
