Putting the words 'corporate' and 'festival' in the same sentence has historically not been the smartest of moves. (Cue being pinned up to the wall whilst some 40-something hippie gives it the 'I was at Glastonbury in the 70s, man, when it was all about the music and the cider and sticking two fingers up the the system, man and not about selling mobile phones, man, etc, etc'.) |

But is the corporate dollar really such a bad thing? Apart from the obvious upside in terms of better facilities, security, medical services, etc, some brands are actually making their presence felt for the good of Joe Public and not so that the Z-list 'VIPs' don't have to mix with the hoi poloi. Rizla's Blue Pavilion at the riotous Bestival is a 24-hour ambient and electronica arena which gives unsigned talent the chance to play a 30-minute set to a live festival crowd. Meanwhile, this weekend's Love Box extravaganza features a 55 DSL tent open to all, which promises a touch of glamour for anyone looking for an alternative to a sauna-like beer tent. And for the more intellectual amongst us, the Port Eliot Litfest promises an ICA-sponsored Write-Off - a literary competition where festival goers can collectively write their own novel. So, there you have it - corporate as a force for good. (Just don't say it too loudly.)
