If you've ever over-indulged in too much daytime television then you may have come away with the impression that auction houses are plagued by hoards of lonely pensioners egged on by over-zealous men in garish sports blazers as they desperately try and raise enough money for a new colostomy bag. |

This isn't the entire picture however, and if your only experience of an auction is the occasional glance at eBay to see what Britney's hair is currently going for, then you might benefit from a quick trip out into the real world, where there's more than a few bargains to be had. A great place for beginners is Lots Road in Chelsea. You'll
have the moneyed locals to compete with but don't let that put you off;
it's worth a visit just to witness the sheer Aladdin's Cave atmosphere
of the place. The weekly Sunday auctions are nothing if not eclectic,
this week's catalogue alone offers many fantastic curiosities (we've
already got our eye on a pair of nickel plated binoculars and a vintage
child's pedal car). |

And remember 'auction' doesn't necessarily mean 'antiques', there's a healthy amount of contemporary designer pieces for all you minimalist/modernist types. Just leave the Del Boy/David Dickinspn impressions at home eh, we don't want to embarrass anyone now do we? Lots Road Auctions
