Is it us or are the big museums getting a little tired? Big shows, big names, big budgets; little surprise, and there's so much more out there.

Take the Horniman Museum, in deepest, darkest Forest Hill. It's an absolute gem, but you've probably never even heard of it. It's easily one of the most eclectic museums in the UK: there's an aquarium, an exhibition dedicated to African culture, a vast collection of musical instruments and enough Victorian pickled creatures to satisfy even the most gothic of morbid tastes. Oh, and the stuffed Walrus has to be seen to be believed.

Vying for the eclecticism title is the Sir John Soanes Museum. Soanes spent his life indulging his twin passions - architecture and collecting art and antiquities and demolished and rebuilt three houses in Lincoln's Inn Fields to create a permant home for his collection which, thanks to the fact he fell out with his sons, is permanently open to the public.

UJ's favourite unsung hero of the London museum world is Dennis Severs, though. His house in Spitalfields is an 18th century time capsule and the candlelit tour is one of the most unique museum experiences you'll ever have. It beats queuing three hours to have a go on a slide any day.

Horniman Museum - open 10:30am-5:30pm daily
Sir John Soane's - open 10am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday
Dennis Severs' House - open Monday nights and 1st & 3rd Sunday of the month
Watch out for the First Thursdays initiative launching on May 3, meaning late gallery opening in East London
