The Numero Group is a magnificent record label from Chicago dedicated to those who slipped through the cracks. Numero makes it its mission to build what it calls 'a library of the lost'; a rich archive in honour of the soul, funk, disco and folk acts of the '60s and '70s who never made it. The musicians and singers who despite clear talent were buried by a music industry which only ever had an attention span for stars; in other words those who never amounted to zip when it came to the charts. |

Hence with this bold cause, over the years Numero has excavated some unusual but incredibly good sonic nuggets, such as Catherine Howe's folk masterpiece 'What A Beautiful Place', or the irrepressible funk to be found on 'Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay'. Their latest compilation focuses on children from the early '70s who jumped up on stage and belted out feel-good soul songs. You've know Michael and Jermaine, but have you heard Cindy & The Playmates or the aptly named Little Murray & The Mantics? These were the little critters who didn't have dance instructors or
stylists; just a lot of enthusiasm and an A&R man who applied a
pop coating to their soul in a bid for a hit. 'Home Schooled' proves
to be a fascinating historical collection of those who were never tall
enough to touch the big time, but had youthfulness, energy and charisma
upon which to stand. |

It may be subtitled 'The ABCs of Kid Soul', but this is no boring lesson. It's a school's out bumper-packed lunchbox of innocent musical fun. Numero Group |
