Not Losing Their Edge
Felix

Fabric's ground-breaking budget mix CD series has for years now been a great insight into the minds of the world's cutting-edge DJs, but also a useful way to take the pulse of clubland and see what state of health it is in. This recent Fabriclive mix is, however, more a snapshot of underground club culture not in the UK, but from late '70s to '80s New York.

The fact that this mix has the Big Apple at its core, is not surprising when you realise that it has been put together by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and Pat Mahoney. Murphy's role in his hometown's music scene is well documented, most notably through DFA Records. Here they sidestep contemporary disco punk and select cracking tunes which are more disco than punk.

Underground anthems such as Peech Boys' 'Life Is Something Special' and Love Committee's 'Just As Long As I Have Got You' rub up against Donald Byrd and retro-modern producers such as the brilliant Daniel Wang and Mudd.

Respect has to be given to Fabric for continuing to champion the music and artists they have always believed in, and praise is certainly due to Murphy and Mahoney for turning out Fabric's best mix CD to date.

Fabriclive 36 by James Murphy and Pat Mahoney is out now and available at Amazon.co.uk.
