Bring on the Vin

The Tiffany tree at Somerset House has officially been lit (by Thandie no less), which means to us, it's now officially Christmas. Time to turn our thoughts to wine, and where to drink it, then.

Tom Harrow, our wine guru extrordinaire has outlined three of his favourite spots, to wine and rest your weary legs.

Wonder Bar at Selfridges
It may not be a new concept - Oyster card system where you help yourself to wine - but we haven't tired of it yet. There's limited space in the bar here, but they have a great selection of fine wines by the glass, including sherry and even saki. Particularly strong New World choices and good if expensive accompanying selections of seafood, charcuterie and cheese plates.

Vinoteca
A bar/enoteca that could hold its own in Paris or Italy (its collection of French and Italian wines is also a strength) serving interesting wines by the glass. The food is honest, both in quality and price, and compliments the wines (chef ex-Bibendum); and if you do move on to full bottles, the mark-ups are increasingly reasonable as you work up (down) the extensive, eclectic list.

1707 Wine Bar at Fortnum & Mason
Another David Collins design, 1707, downstairs at refurbished F&M, offers an award-winning wine selection, many by the glass, as well as great value wine flights (three smaller, tasting measures of related wines, i.e., Austrian reds, Alsace whites, etc) and paired food suggestions. Open late (long after the store has closed), where else can you drink fine wines in Piccadilly for just £10 more than their retail price in the food hall next door?
